September 2004 - Feeding Trial
 

REQUIREMENTS:
• Five head group minimum of Maine-Anjou influenced
calves (5 steers or 5 heifers).
• Producers may consign as many groups of five as desired.
• Preferred delivery weight: 550-650 lbs.
• $10 per head entry fee


DELIVERY DATE: Oct. 27-28, 2004
• Upon delivery to the feed yard, ALL cattle must have health certificates. Brand area cattle MUST have health certificates AND brand clearance form.
• Producers will retain ownership


PRE-VACCINATION PROTOCOL:
• 4 Way Viral (IBR, BVD, PI3, BRSV), Pasteurella, 7 Way
Clostridial
• Suggest two doses of vaccine before arrival
•Steers and heifers must be weaned and pre-vaccinated. They will receive another vaccination upon arrival at the feed yard.

CONTEST RULES: • Contest prizes will be awarded separately for steers and heifers based upon numbers entered.
• Prizes paid for rate of carcass gain and for carcass
premiums earned.
• Prizes paid to the top five individual animals for carcass gain and the top five individuals for carcass premiums. Prizes will also be paid to the top three
“Groups of Five” for carcass gain and the top three
“Groups of Five” for carcass premiums.
• Prizes paid to the top three individuals for the highest daily gain.
• The highest individual based on its placing in carcass gain and carcass premium will receive the Champion Award.
• The highest ranking “Group of Five” based on its placing in carcass gain and carcass premium will receive the Champion Group Award.
• Carcass data - contest steers and heifers will receive individual carcass data. Carcass premiums will be based on the PM Beef Ranch to Retail Grid.

• Total feed cost per head will be the average total feed cost of all the steers and heifers in the feeding trial times the
number of head days per animal. Total cost of gain will be calculated as follows: the average feed cost/head/day
divided by the average rate of gain per individual animal. Example: $1.50/day divided by 3.2 lbs. gain = 46.9 cents per
pound of gain times the animal’s total gain. Steers and heifers will be weighed on delivery date, after the 30-day
adaptation period and at the time of the second implant with possible ultrasound.
• Final market weight will be carcass weight divided by a dressing percentage of 63%.
