Priceless Memories
Can we put a price tag on memories? The kind that put a big smile on your face and make you laugh out loud. Good memories stay with a person forever. The national junior Maine-Anjou show brings priceless memories to the hundreds involved. Many memories are made throughout the week of junior nationals. Junior participants, parents, grandparents, sisters, brothers, board members, association members and well, whoever else gets the privilege to experience the show, go home with an array of new memories.

Junior Maine-Anjou members share a special bond among themselves, a bond most kids their age don’t get the privilege to encounter. A bond for the love of cattle, being a “farm kid,” being competitive, having sportsmanship, having respect for your fellow competitors and knowing how to have fun. The national junior show brings together old and new friends sharing similar hobbies and interests in the cattle industry. It’s an experience of a lifetime.

The national junior show is a week of friendship, fun, contests and cattle shows. What better way to spend a week than at junior nationals? Hanging out with friends, competing at all levels of competition, showing cattle and having a great time in the process. It teaches a great deal of respect and responsibility.

I walked away with many memories from the 2004 National Junior Show. I encountered a very talented group of young individuals. These junior members are talented in every aspect of the industry. At times they can be quite intimidating. Their brilliance on the cattle and the Maine-Anjou industry is overwhelming. Keep it up guys, you’re great! You have a bright future ahead of you. I am positive we could put our junior Maine-Anjou exhibitors up against a lot of competition and they would come out on top. Thanks for an enjoyable week.

Junior members showed off their creativity skills in the photography, poster, state scrapbook and Web site contests. Their cattle skills are phenomenal in the livestock judging, team grooming, showmanship and salesmanship contests. Words can’t explain the knowledge and expertise these junior Maine-Anjou members have in the quiz bowl and public speaking contests. Cherish these memories and hold them close to you. They will be some of the best times of your lives. Friendships will be made that will last a lifetime, knowledge will be gained to aid in future endeavors and respect will be taught to make you a better person.

Memories truly are priceless!
At this time I would like to send a big thanks out to Daniel Meyers, Director of Youth Activities at the American Maine-Anjou Association and Jill Nessler, host state coordinator, Illinois Maine-Anjou Association. A LOT of hard work went into this junior show and these two individuals had a lot to show for it. Countless hours are spent putting together an event with this magnitude. Next time you see or talk to Daniel or Jill remember to show your appreciation for a great national junior show. Also, thanks to everyone involved in planning and helping with the 2004 National Junior Maine-Anjou Show. It was a great success!

“Got Thank Yous?”
Where does the time go? Those who attended the 2004 National Junior Show a few short months
ago may be asking the same question. It seems like yesterday we were all in Springfield, Ill.,
walking, rinsing and fitting those wonderful creations we call Maine-Anjou cattle. I look back
like it was yesterday remembering funny stories, steep competition and the memories and
friendships that will last a lifetime!

I would like to thank everyone who made the 2004 National Junior Show a special event. A
special thank you to Mrs. Jill Nessler and her committees for making everyone feel welcome.
Also, a huge thanks to Daniel and the office staff, they do a lot of behind the scenes work and
need to be commended for making our junior association run smoothly! An event of this size
takes organization and a lot of hard work. I want to encourage you, if you have not done so
already, to please write thank you notes to those who sponsored an award, a class you were in or a contest you participated in. Please make sure the people who made the show possible know you appreciate their support! Everyone should have written at least one thank you to someone!

As we move into the fall and the national show scene, I want to encourage you as juniors to
utilize your junior board members. We are here to represent you, so do not hesitate to ask us for
help or call us with your suggestions. I want to thank my peers for having faith in me to lead
them into the 2004-2005 year. It is a great honor to represent such a dynamic breed and a great
group of people that are a part of our breed. So until the next time we meet, enjoy every moment
left of summer and be sure to thank your parents, grandparents and friends for making the trips,
putting on the miles and getting you where you need to go!

Sincerely yours,

Marci McDonnell

Texas Maine-Anjou Juniors Excel
by Kyla Nesheim

Texas Junior State Maine-Anjou Show – July 11, 2004 – Navasota, Texas
The Texas Maine-Anjou Association held their second annual state Maine-Anjou show on July 11, 2004, in Navasota, Texas. Texas junior Maine-Anjou exhibitors traveled up to 12 hours to participate in their state Maine-Anjou show. The quality ran deep, and junior members were in high spirits. Texas is known for quality cattle and that definitely rang true with the Maine-Anjou breed.

Prizes for the show were phenomenal! On top of receiving TCCA points, junior members received great prizes. The Texas Maine-Anjou Association really outdid themselves with the prizes. Shiny belt buckles, embroidered bags, banners and prize trophies were a few prizes given to the exhibitors.

The Texas Junior Maine-Anjou Association held their annual meeting the night before the show on Saturday, July 10. The meeting kicked off with a delicious burger feed. New officers for the 2004-2005 year were chosen to lead their state junior association. The Texas Junior Maine-Anjou Association’s new officers include President Jessica Housley, Christoval; Vice President Josh Warner, Thorndale; Secretary Allison Moore, Barry; Treasurer Natalie Schaeffer, Crockett; and three directors, Michelle Hajdik, Bellville, C.A. Jones, Sunray, and Hollen Slaughter, La Porte.

A tough competition ensued for the 2004-2005 Texas Maine-Anjou royalty positions. Three candidates were chosen – sweetheart, princess and queen. Tori Faircloth, Pollok, was crowned sweetheart, Natalie Schaeffer was crowned princess, and Jessica Housley won the battle for the queen’s crown. These three Texas ladies will represent the Maine-Anjou breed throughout the year attending shows and supporting the Maine-Anjou program.

Honors for exhibitor of the year were given to two junior Maine-Anjou members who spent countless hours traveling to shows across Texas. Matthew Dean, Bellville, was named first place exhibitor of the year and Ashley Fleming, Sealy, was second. Texas junior members will hold a fundraiser for their state Maine-Anjou Association by selling raffle tickets for a purebred Maine- njou heifer. Jerry Gibson of J&J Farms, Decatur, Texas will donate the heifer to the junior members for the raffle. Junior members will sell raffle tickets throughout the first few months of 2005. They will start selling raffle tickets at the Southwestern Exposition and Livestock Show, Ft. Worth, in January 2005. They will continue to sell the tickets at the San Angelo Stock Show, San Antonio Stock Show, and end at the Houston Livestock Show, where the raffle drawing will be held.

A group of eager junior members were ready for the show to get underway on Sunday, July 11. Numbers for the state show were up and competition was definitely tough. Jennifer Parker, Wylie, evaluated the cattle.
